Health Tips for Winter Wellness

Canadians know that when Winter is coming, it's time to make preparations. We winterize our homes and our vehicles, but don't always take the same care with our bodies. With the changing season you may have noticed that your energy is less abundant, your sleep patterns are more profound, your appetite has increased and your moods are up and down for no apparent reason. This is your biological instinct to prepare for Winter. The natural way your body tells you “Slow Down! It's time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate". The summer months are the time for long days and hard work, energized by sunshine and fresh enzyme rich fruits and vegetables. For Winter, we must take special precautions to ensure we have enough fuel stored to get us through the dark months. Now in Autumn, we must harvest healing herbs, and ripe nutritious berries, and take advantage of the bounty of rich fresh food from our farms and forests. Here in the North, folks are hunting, fishing and foraging to fill up our freezers and pantries. As well as food, we can prepare dried herbs, tinctures, salves, and tonics to keep us relaxed, nourished, and energized.

The closer you live to the cycle of nature, the better you'll feel. Unfortunately, this is not always possible for those in the city, working full time jobs year long, you may not be getting the nutrition and time of rest your body needs to stay healthy. The constant stress of pushing our bodies when we should be resting creates illnesses that force us into unproductive rest periods filled with misery. It can feel like a downward spiral, but making changes to your diet is the key to feeling better. No special diet is needed. Vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, just eat real food. That is all you need to do. Eliminate junk, highly processed food, and sugary drinks. Eat real foods, drink real beverages. Real food is alive, and will make you feel more alive. One benefit of our busy modern world is that nature's bounty can be found in stores year round, all you have to do is make the right choices.

Another great way to focus on improving your health is with herbs and herbal remedies that target your specific issues and help you feel supercharged through the stress of the season.
